Assistive Technology (AT) Assessment, Prescription and Training

totallyOT are able to conduct AT assessments to identify the need for, and provide recommendations for items, to support participation in daily tasks and to access the community.

These assessment are conducted with each individual based on their unique needs and solutions are tailored to them, their environment and future support needs.

Consideration of the NDIS Reasonable and Necessary Criterion is paramount, hence sometimes multiple trials are required, to be able to demonstrate the effectiveness (or otherwise) of any AT and justify the use of any NDIS funds or request funds for items. The risk associated with the item also needs to be considered and evidence of the risks and rationale for the item needs to be provided by an AT Assessor or Occupational Therapist. totallyOT can fulfill this requirement. Consideration of whether the AT also requires a restrictive practice protocol is performed. In this event, totallyOT will work closely with Support Providers and any Behavioural Support Plans/ Practitioners to ensure that all necessary paperwork and notifications are completed.

We work closely with the Tasmanian based AT suppliers for options and can also work with these suppliers to source more specific items from Mainland suppliers if needed.

Usually a full Functional Capacity Assessment is also required when completing assessments for Mid or High Cost or higher risk AT items. We will consider FCA reports from other suppliers – depending on recency and the quality of content. Some independent assessment or observation to be able to include information first hand will be required.

Training in the use of any AT (prescribed by totallyOT) will be provided by totallyOT or the Supplier at delivery.

If the AT is used for transfers, totallyOT will ensure compatibility with the use of the item and any other items used daily e.g. commodes, wheelchairs, bed etc.

Should more extensive training be required, totallyOT can provide training for staff and or family members. Additional time/ funds might be required.
